Picking the right lot
So you’ve decided to build a home. The first step in the process is to decide where you want to build.
  • Are you looking for privacy and space?
  • Do you want to be in a family friendly neighbourhood?
  • What about proximity to shopping, work, the highway?
All of these questions should come into consideration. Once you’ve settle on an area you need to focus on picking a lot that will work for you.

There are two ways you can do this:
  1. Find a lot in an area that you desire and pick a house plan based on the characteristics of the lot.
  2. Find a house plan that you want and pick a lot that will accommodate that style of home.
Not every lot will accommodate every house. Some things to consider:
  • Are you looking for a walk out basement?
  • Do you want a level driveway or the home to sit up high with a view?
  • Do you have children and do you need space to accommodate a play structure or a basketball net?
Common house styles and best settings:
  • Split entry homes work best on lots that slope up from front to back
  • End-on splits work well on level lots.
  • Lots that slope down from front to back can accommodate a walk out basement but sometimes the homes have to be built up and that can mean a steeper driveway.
